The 964 model line was replaced by the 993 for the 1994 model year. This transition marked a major advancement not only in technology but also in design. The 993 Carrera's front fenders were wider and flatter. The luggage compartment lid was shortened, eliminating the black rubber lip between the body and front bumper that had been present on the G model through to the 964. The rear fenders were widened and linearly extended into the rear section, featuring tall taillights. The 993 was initially available as a rear-wheel drive coupe and cabriolet. In 1995, the four-wheel drive Carrera 4 and 911 Turbo were introduced, featuring a viscous multi-plate clutch.
