This Godzilla film is directed by Kensho Yamashita, a student of director Kihachi Okamoto. His master's fast-paced action scenes are still alive and well, but in this film, the characters' personalities are even more compelling than Godzilla, allowing for a fascinating performance battle. Akira Emoto plays Yuki, a soldier isolated from the Godzilla countermeasure team, G-Force; Jun Hashizume plays Shinjo, a G-Force member who falls in love with Miki Saegusa (Emi Kodaka), a shrine maiden to Godzilla; Tomoko Yoshikawa plays Chinatsu Gondo, a female scientist; and Yosuke Saito plays a corrupt broker. Godzilla's enemy in this film is Space Godzilla, a monster born from Godzilla cells scattered throughout space. Moguera, the robot monster from the 1957 film "Earth Defense Force," is also reborn as G-Force's Godzilla-fighting mecha, surprising and delighting all old monster-loving fans. The VS series has never depicted the damage caused by monster disasters, but this film is unusual in that it features a city that has been hit by the disaster and turned into a mountain of rubble.
