A very popular souvenir item in Okinawa, the deep blue color of firefly glass evokes the Okinawan sea. Like lampwork beads, it's a perforated glass bead made using a shaping technique called lampworking.

Craftsmen melt colored glass one by one, roll it around an iron core, and then layer silver leaf onto the molten glass, creating beautiful colors using a special technique.

While there are no clear records of when firefly glass, a type of lampwork bead not originating in Okinawa, became a popular Okinawan souvenir, it's believed to have gained attention in the late 1980s as an alternative to rare coral products, and its deep ocean-like colors captured the hearts of tourists.
