The Four Heavenly Kings protect Mt. Sumeru, which is at the center of the Buddhist world, from all sides. The guardian of the east is Jikokuten (national security), the south is Zochoten (rich grain), the west is Komokuten (clairvoyance), and the north is Tamonten (guardian of Buddhism). The statues of the Four Heavenly Kings are all made to look like dignified Chinese military commanders, standing with two hands on one side. He wears armor, holds a weapon, and has an angry expression on his face as he stomps on the evil demon's head and abdomen. Evil spirits are said to be symbols of earthly desires that reside in people's hearts. Tamonten (Bishamonten) is a warrior and guardian deity of Tenbu, one of the Four Heavenly Kings, along with Jikokuten, Zochoten, and Komokuten. In addition to being a member of the Four Heavenly Kings, he is also worshiped as a sole deity in a wide range of regions outside of Japan, including Central Asia and China. There are various expressions for its appearance, but in Japan it is generally depicted as a Tang Dynasty military commander wearing leather armor. Treasure towers are common possessions. Also, they often ride on demon-shaped people called Jaki. However, the statue of the Four Heavenly Kings in the Kaidan-do Hall of Todaiji Temple is depicted holding a treasure pagoda in its right hand and holding a treasure stick in its left hand. Also, in Esoteric Buddhism, it is said to be one of the twelve deities and protect the north. It is also considered to be one of the Seven Lucky Gods as a uniquely Japanese belief, and is said to be particularly beneficial in winning or losing battles.
