The Hogen Rebellion in 1156 and the Heiji Rebellion in 1159 brought the Heike clan to its peak of prosperity, but by order of Emperor Mochihito, movements to overthrow the Heike clan began in various places. The game is set in the period of conflict between the Genji and Heike clans until the establishment of the Kamakura Shogunate.
