Picture book: The Tale of Genji

Would you like to become more knowledgeable about The Tale of Genji? This book has been created to provide an easy-to-understand illustration of The Tale of Genji, a work that has been loved by many people for nearly a thousand years. The illustrations in this book are based on the 60-volume, 60-book version of The Tale of Genji, published in 1645 (Keian 3) with a postscript in 1665 (Shoo 3), held at the Department of Japanese Literature, Faculty of Letters, University of Tokyo. The missing Suma chapter has been supplemented by the same publication record held at Tsurumi University Library, and all 226 illustrations (including 9 double-page spreads) have been extracted from this book. To ensure that The Tale of Genji can be understood from this book alone, a story synopsis and explanations of the illustrations have been added, and at the end of the book there is a family tree of the main characters and a chronology of the Hikaru Genji clan, which helps to grasp the flow of the story.
