The missing Suma chapter has been supplemented by the same publication record held at Tsurumi University Library, and all 226 illustrations (including 9 double-page spreads) have been extracted from this book.
To ensure that The Tale of Genji can be understood from this book alone, a story synopsis and explanations of the illustrations have been added, and at the end of the book there is a family tree of the main characters and a chronology of the Hikaru Genji clan, which helps to grasp the flow of the story.
