This [Kamawanu] hand towel features a spring design with auspicious motifs. “Kamawanu” is a pun, combining the characters for sickle (kama) + circle (wa) + cloth (nu). These puns were a form of riddle popular in the Edo period. “Kamawanu” expresses the spirit of Edo townspeople who selflessly helped the weak, without regard for their own safety. Please enjoy these classic patterns imbued with such meaning.

・The Meaning Behind the Pattern: This chic pattern features traditional bean-dyeing, a technique beloved for generations as a symbol of hand towels. The “beans” depicted in this pattern are a play on words, representing a healthy and energetic life (“living diligently” – wishing for good health and longevity) and diligent work (“working diligently” – wishing for business prosperity). The orderly arrangement of small circles also symbolizes the prosperity of the family line and household safety. This design evokes a sense of nostalgia and familiarity, containing a warm charm that wishes for a healthy life and lasting happiness for the user.
・[Kamawanu] hand towels are made with total-print (bun) fabric. Compared to the specially thick fabric used for picture hand towels, this fabric has a coarser weave and is thicker. As a result, it is highly absorbent and breathable, making it a practical hand towel. The appeal of total-print fabric is that it develops a unique character with use.
・There are two main types of fabric used for hand towels: “bun” and “oka.” Bun fabric is woven with thicker, 20-count yarn, while oka fabric is woven with finer, 30-count yarn. Oka fabric, made with finer yarn, has a finer weave, allowing for detailed designs such as delicate patterns and gradients. Bun fabric, made with thicker yarn, has a coarser weave than oka fabric. However, this allows for better breathability and absorbency, making it ideal for use as a handkerchief or cleaning cloth. While it cannot reproduce the fine detail of oka fabric, it offers the appeal of feeling the texture of the cloth.
